Women in Road Haulage: Opportunities and Barriers

Road haulage has long been seen as a male-dominated industry. Walk into most depots or glance at a passing lorry and the stereotype holds true. But times are changing — slowly — and more women are beginning to see opportunities within this vital sector.

A Blue Sky in the UK??

From driving HGVs to working in planning, compliance, and management, women are proving every day that there’s no job in haulage they can’t do. Their contribution brings fresh perspectives, strengthens teams, and helps tackle the industry’s most pressing challenge: recruitment.

But barriers remain. Outdated perceptions still deter many women from entering the profession, with the image of haulage as “a man’s world” persisting. Facilities on the road, from rest stops to secure parking, often fail to consider female drivers’ needs, making the job less appealing and, at times, less safe. In some workplaces, unconscious bias and a lack of visible role models continue to hold women back.

Yet the opportunity is clear. By making the industry more inclusive, road haulage can tap into a wider pool of talent and strengthen its workforce at a time when drivers, planners, and compliance professionals are in short supply.

The next step is action: better facilities, stronger mentorship, and a conscious effort to challenge outdated stereotypes. Women have always had a place in haulage — but now is the time to make sure they feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated.

Because a diverse industry is a stronger industry, and the road ahead should be open to everyone.
