UK Service Areas: Letting HGV Drivers Down

HGV drivers are the backbone of the UK supply chain. They spend long hours on the road delivering the goods that keep the country running — yet when it comes to basic facilities at service areas, they are too often let down.

Secure, clean, and affordable rest stops are essential for drivers’ safety and wellbeing. Yet across the UK, many lorry drivers are forced to park in overcrowded or poorly lit areas, often paying high fees for the privilege. Toilets and showers, when available, are frequently inadequate, with some drivers reporting that they’re unclean, outdated, or unsafe.

For women drivers, the problem is even more acute. Many facilities were never designed with female drivers in mind, leaving them with limited privacy and security. This only reinforces the barrier to attracting more women into the industry at a time when recruitment is already in crisis.

But this is not just a gender issue — it affects every driver. After long shifts, all drivers deserve safe places to rest, proper washing facilities, and affordable, good-quality food. These basics are not luxuries; they are a fundamental part of keeping the workforce healthy, safe, and motivated.

It’s time for government and service operators to take this seriously. Investment in secure parking, clean facilities, and fair pricing is long overdue. If we want to value the people who keep Britain moving, we must start by providing them with the dignity and facilities they deserve.
