The UK Government has announced the launch of a major new funding initiative to accelerate the transition to electric fleets. The Depot Charging Scheme, which officially opened on 16 July 2025, will provide grants to support the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at fleet depots across the country.

Designed for both public and private sector operators, the scheme aims to reduce the upfront costs of preparing depot sites for battery-electric vans, HGVs, and coaches. Under the initiative, eligible applicants can apply for up to £1 million in funding, covering as much as 75% of the expenses related to chargepoint installation and civil engineering works.
The scheme is open to applicants across the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) and will remain available until 28 November 2025, or until the allocated budget is fully claimed.
This funding drive is part of the Government’s wider strategy to decarbonise road freight and public sector transport, complementing existing incentives such as the Plug-in Van and Truck Grants, which already support the purchase of electric vehicles.
The Department for Transport (DfT) will fund up to 75% of eligible project costs, which include:
The purchase of EV chargepoints (of any type or charging speed, tailored to fleet needs).
Civil engineering and electrical works required to install and activate the infrastructure.
However, the cost of electric vehicles and any grid connection upgrades are not covered by this grant.
Organisations can apply for funding for multiple depot sites, provided each location meets the eligibility criteria. Only one application per organisation is permitted, with the total grant amount capped at £1 million across all sites.
