Starting in March 2025, Sainsbury's is set to lead the way in sustainable logistics with a bold new initiative. The retailer will use biofuel created from its own food waste to power 30 of its trucks operating from the Bristol distribution centre—representing half of its fleet!

Sainsbury's has partnered with waste processor RenCO to convert food waste that can't be donated or used for animal feed into biogas through anaerobic digestion. This innovative, circular process will then convert the biogas into liquid biofuel that’s fully compatible with HGVs.
In a departure from traditional methods that blend certified biomethane with non-renewable gases, this system ensures that all the fuel powering these trucks is derived directly from Sainsbury's own waste. This collaboration is a game-changer in the fight against climate change, demonstrating how two companies are working together to reduce their environmental impact.
By adopting this biofuel system, Sainsbury’s will cut over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of the yearly electricity consumption of nearly 2,000 households.
