Good news for drivers who dread rummaging through their wallets at the side of the road: as of 29 May 2025, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) now accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay for roadside fines. Yes, you can now pay your penalty with the same device you use to buy coffee. Welcome to the future.
This update comes after a change in the DVSA’s payment provider and aims to make the fine-paying process a little less painful — especially for professional drivers and haulage firms. Time is money, and when you’re on a tight delivery schedule, every minute counts. Contactless payments mean less faff, fewer delays, and more time doing what you’re actually paid to do: driving.

The DVSA’s payment page has had a minor facelift to accommodate the change, but the overall process remains familiar (sadly, getting fined isn’t any more enjoyable).
Common Reasons You Might Need to Tap to Pay:
Breaching driver hours or tachograph rules
Driving a vehicle that's seen better days
Missing or incorrect documents and licences
Weight and load infringements
Emissions issues or mechanical faults
Conduct that makes regulators raise an eyebrow
Fines usually range from £50 to £300. In more serious cases, your vehicle could be immobilised — and no, Apple Pay won’t get it moving again until you sort things out. Foreign drivers, take note: you may need to pay a deposit before continuing your journey.
So, it’s worth giving your drivers a heads-up and updating any compliance materials. Because while no one enjoys getting fined, at least now, it’s slightly more convenient.
