Knowing your drivers isn’t just good business—it’s essential!
But for them, looking after their health and wellbeing is just as critical, because let’s face it, being an HGV driver can be isolating. Long hours on the road, laughable quality of support and services on the road, far from family and home comforts can, and does, take a toll both mentally and physically. So whilst it doesn't fall directly into our remit as hauliers and transport managers, advising on keeping drivers healthy seems like a good idea to me!

Move More, Feel Better
Spending hours behind the wheel demands intense concentration, but it also means limited physical movement—which isn't great for a driver's health. Regular exercise can work wonders for both body and mind, helping to reduce stress, improve mood, and keep them feeling their best. Even simple activities like daily stretching, walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming can make a huge difference. The key? Find a way to stay active—even on the road!
Rest is Non-Negotiable
Did you know that 1 in 5 major accidents in the UK are linked to driver fatigue? Rest isn't just about comfort—it’s a matter of safety. Sticking to legal driving limits and taking breaks at the right times helps drivers stay sharp. Sunlight exposure (hello, Vitamin D!) helps regulate sleep patterns, while avoiding caffeine late in the day can improve sleep quality. We know, we know—giving up that afternoon coffee might feel like blasphemy, but their body will thank you!
Eat Smart, Stay Strong
A healthy diet fuels both physical health and mental clarity. But with nearly a quarter of truck drivers relying on fast food, it’s no surprise that nutrition takes a hit. Cutting back on sugary snacks, upping a fruit intake, and making smarter food choices can have a massive impact. Small changes—big results.
Hydration: Your Secret Weapon
Drinking enough water is key to staying alert, healthy, and even managing weight. Swap out high-sugar drinks for water or natural fruit juices—their body (and sleep schedule) will thank you.
HGV drivers are the lifeblood of the UK’s transport network—literally keeping the country moving.
